Superelastic Nitinol - Tube manipulation
A superelastic nitinol needle with a "hooked" end was collapsed and pushed along a stainless steel needle to allow it to penetrate into tissue.
The guiding needle consists of a stainless steel hypodermic tube, into which an oval hole is precisely laser cut into the wall of the tube swaged and ground to a point at one end. A pre-formed hook-shaped nitinol tube is fed into the stainless tube and the hook emerges through the oval hole, containing a minute capsule of a drug to be delivered from the ground end of the nitinol tube. As the hook emerges, the nitinol re-takes its programmed shape.
